Criminal Defense / DUI

Our DUI services support law-abiding people who have simply made a mistake and have unexpectedly encountered the legal justice system.

DUI cases are the largest part of our practice, because this is the way law-abiding people typically run afoul of the legal justice system. As such, Mike Brewer has developed particular expertise in DUI cases.

Mike is a long-time member of the National College for DUI Defense and the California DUI Lawyers Association. He trains regularly with those organizations on the law and science of DUI cases, and he trains on DMV rules and regulations. Mike also regularly attends the Mastering Scientific Evidence conference, an annual meeting of the top attorneys and experts from around the country.

The Brewer Law Firm handles a large number of other driving-related cases, including vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run, and DMV driver license suspension cases. We probably handle more hit-and-run cases than any other firm in Orange County. Our DMV cases include DUI suspensions, point-based suspensions, and negligent operator suspensions.

We focus on representing law-abiding people and their unique concerns. These are people who are not “criminals,” but those who instead have an uncharacteristic brush with the criminal justice system. These individuals have unique concerns, such as the effect these incidents would have on their career, professional licenses, and driver licenses.

DUI cases are one of the most common ways that people come into contact with the criminal justice system. Many cases involve alcohol, but a number involve drugs, called DUID's. Most of our DUID cases involve legal drugs that our clients may take, not knowing they would be impaired, such as painkillers and other medication. In other cases, they may take medications without intending to drive, such as Ambien or other mental health medications.

As part of our DUI practice, we have a great deal of expertise in DMV hearings, since they are usually involved with DUI cases. This also includes negligent operator hearings due to accruing too many points against a license, and negligent operator hearings due to medical conditions or those associated with age.

Other frequent cases include allegations involving hit-and-run accidents, drunk in public arrests, domestic violence, fraud, theft, drug possession, road rage, and assaultive conduct. Mike Brewer also has particular expertise in the law of self-defense and defense of property, and he is currently writing the definitive California legal guide on this subject.

Mike Brewer can, and has throughout his career, successfully represented clients on nearly every type of criminal offense, from murder to petty theft.
